KPS provides a Macquarie University literacy support program for Years 1 – 6 students.
The MultiLit Program incorporates MiniLit (Years 1 + 2), an early intervention literacy program and MacqLit (Years 3-6), a Macquarie Literacy Program for small group instruction.
The MiniLit Program focusses on the key elements of early reading programs: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development and text comprehension.
The MacqLit Program further supports the development of the MiniLit skills and helps older children move from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’.
The program is timetabled for 4 days per week. Two fully trained facilitators coordinate the programs. MiniLit children generally attend 4 x 35 minute sessions and MacqLit children 3 x 40 minute sessions per week.
A colourful and welcoming ‘MultiLit’ room provides a comfortable learning environment for the children. It is well resourced with MiniLit and MacqLit resources and recommended reading book series to support the programs.
The program has been supporting KPS students at risk in literacy since 2020 and is highly valued by staff and parents.
